My boy Phillyron went to the Digital Life Convention this weekend and got a chance to look at the Wii and PS3. He talked with Mike Johnson from EA about Madden on the PS3. It sounds better than the 360 Madden, but here is his report
Digital Life Technology Convention:
This event is the little brother of the E3 Convention held every year out in Los Angles but make no mistake it is not lacking in excitement nor in the amount of new things about to hit the market place for consumers. It is not an event that is solely dedicated to video games but as a gamer and a person that has had the chance to now go to one of these, it is a must see. The Venue showed the bridge between the video game industry and the home audio video industry. It’s nice to have a PS2/XBOX/XBOX360, or PS3 but wouldn’t it be great if you could have all of them and have them connected to a multimedia center so that you can access all of them at one time. The Event was, hot but let’s get to what we all care about, Madden.
Nintendo Wii:
The Wii is a system that I had a negative bias to because of the two joysticks and the motion aspect. Don’t let that deter you in picking up this system. Madden on the Wii was great, and I’m not giving you a personal playing account but from the guys that I interviewed while walking around the EA booth area. This game, from 1pm until 5:30, when I left was packed with people waiting to get on the sticks. I mean I walked around interviewing people so I can sneak to the front of the line and I still couldn’t get a chance to play the game. I will say that the play call screen has been changed for this system and it has 4 play options set up, 2x2 for both offense and defense. Here are a few comments from the guys that actually played the game:
Brendan from (Lean wit it, Rock wit it) Rockaway, NJ said
“I have the 360 and the impact stick, hit stick and kicking works a whole lot better on the Wii because of the motion sensor. It just feels more responsive, you really get the feel of the hit stick and it shows”
David from the Boogie Down Bronx said:
“Overall the game is very easy to pick up on the Wii and it seams easy. The only thing that seems hard is the kicking”
Javon, Christopher and Colin from Brooklyn said:
“We are a little disappointed in the graphics but the game actually plays better then the current gen XBOX.”
My opinion: After watching and trying to get a game for over 5 hours I can tell you now that the Nintendo Wii is going to be a hit. First off the east coast does not get real hype over games and we seem to have a smaller attention span to something if it is not truly appealing. The Wii grabs your attention as soon as you pick up the sticks, if you can get your hands on one. For the Madden community this means we could actually grow our community by adding tournaments on the Wii. I can tell you know the numbers will be there if we decide to do this.
PS3:
Sorry guys I don’t have much here for you, but it’s not my fault, you can blame Sony for this. The PS3 was there and it is an amazing looking game, yes it does look better than the 360 and I have no bias, I buy whatever technology that comes out and I have been on the XBOX for 2 years now. The graphics are crisper throughout the entire screen. The only game that they had running was the NBA 07 but it did the job of making plenty of people stop in their tracks and say what is that. In regards to Madden I can only give you first hand info from our community leader Mike Johnson. I didn’t grill him with questions but I did ask him two major questions. 1) Has the game been completed yet? A) Not yet, it will be done and ready for print in about 2 weeks.
2) If that’s the case, does that mean the fatigue issue that was in the XBOX 360 has been addressed on this system. A) Yes, the fatigue has been corrected in the PS3.
MJ further went on to give me some insight as to some of the new aspects that set the PS3 apart from the XBOX 360. For one he said that the physics of the PS3 are so advanced that players will do different things, you will see gang or swarm tackling in the game. So if you’re trying to break a tackle with the HB and there is a corner that is near the play he will run over and assist on the tackle. Get ready for some strip balls from the defense. MJ also said that there is an aspect in the programming called “6 degrees of freedom” This is what they are referring to the likeness between the motion aspect that is seen in the Wii but how it works on the PS3. To clarify, the PS3 has a motion sensor built into the joystick, so for those of you who are real animated when playing Madden and pushing forward when hit sticking or leaning when trying to catch that ball right before it sails out of bounds then this Madden on the PS3 will have that aspect covered for you in the game. Your motion can actually assist you in the way you play the game.
Overall I am looking forward to the new game systems coming out in the Wii and the PS3. I’ll get the PS3 when it comes out, and get the Wii for the kids for Christmas. But what would really be nice is to grab one of those Media Center computers with a Terabyte of memory and run everything from there.
